A Space Marine Got a Status Window
Doctor Space, who would go down as one of the most famous figures in human history, drew the attention of all humanity to absolutely everything related to him.
His family was no exception.
Furthermore, Doctor Space had far more children than anyone would have imagined.
More than twenty-three people had been officially recognized as his children, and the number of children who had not been officially recognized was even greater.
Among all those children were quite a few people who could perfectly well be described as geniuses.
The same was true of his grandsons and granddaughters.
And one of them was Jennifer Jo.
Doctor Space, who refused to recognize as geniuses even people whom anyone else would consider extraordinarily intelligent, and who would not even acknowledge his own children if he considered them inadequate, had once said.
“Jennifer, that girl is a little like me.”
That meant two things.
The first was that she possessed enough talent for even Doctor Space to recognize her as a genius.
The second was that she was just as eccentric as Doctor Space.
In any case, she was a genius recognized by Doctor Space, and naturally, countries all over the world coveted her talent.
And it was the United States that ultimately managed to secure that talent.
That was the extent of Jennifer Jo’s story.
Naturally, the vast majority of humanity would never have any reason to associate with someone like Jennifer Jo.
Kim Seojun was no exception.
He had no particular interest in either Jennifer Jo or Doctor Space.
The only reason he knew that name was because of his younger sister.
One day, after finishing his active service, returning to Earth, and beginning to live peacefully, his younger sister had approached him and told him that Jennifer Jo had done a cover of a famous singer’s song, that she sang incredibly well, and that it had been spectacular.
Kim Seojun had responded by telling her to stop that and go bring him some water.
Afterward, his sister had yelled at him that this was exactly why he could never get a girlfriend, and the two of them had ended up arguing and fighting for a while.
That was the entire reason Kim Seojun knew Jennifer Jo’s name.
“Are you saying Jennifer Jo is on planet Amotia?”
But now he had just learned that this very Jennifer Jo was there with them on planet Amotia.
Naturally, the first thing Kim Seojun thought was something else.
“Couldn’t it be false information?”
There was a possibility that it wasn’t true.
At those words, Park Boseop, who was participating in the emergency meeting they had convened, spoke in surprise.
“Uh, Sergeant Kim, are you saying the American headquarters is lying?”
According to his common sense, that was impossible.
“I also consider that possibility fairly likely.”
“Huh?”
However, Park Boseop showed a surprised expression at Lee Hyena’s response.
It was then that Kim Seojun explained it to him.
“People are capable of telling any lie if it means surviving. Using the name of a celebrity is common.”
Kim Seojun knew better than anyone that there were no limits to what a cornered person could do.
“Besides, we’re talking about the United States. If the American headquarters asks for help, what country do you think will go help them?”
After all, the United States was a country that had practically never needed to receive help from anyone.
To be exact, no other country was even in a position where it could dare ask the United States whether it needed help.
The only one that came close to such a position was China.
And China had just declared war.
For many reasons, from the perspective of the survivors of the American headquarters, it was completely natural to use any means possible to get someone to respond to their rescue request.
There was nothing strange about it.
“Then what does Sergeant Kim plan to do?”
What mattered was Kim Seojun’s decision.
Kim Seojun remained deep in thought for a few moments before answering.
“We’ll ignore the request for support.”
Everyone fell silent at that decision.
That was all.
No one could object.
If the American headquarters had reached the point of requesting rescue, that was proof enough that an absurd Mog force had appeared there.
Facing something like that using the troops available at the Polish headquarters was madness.
‘We already have enough problems of our own.’
Above all, the Polish headquarters itself was currently in danger.
Mobilize troops to help others when they didn’t know when China or the Mog might appear?
Even if they managed to complete the rescue, it wouldn’t be strange if, just as they were returning, they received a transmission from the Polish headquarters desperately begging them to save them.
Of course, one question still remained.
“Uh, Sergeant Kim. What will you do if it really is Jennifer Jo?”
“In that case, we’ll try to come up with a rescue plan. If it really is Jennifer Jo, the United States will mobilize to rescue her. They’ll use any means necessary.”
If the information was true and they managed to rescue her, the chances of Kim Seojun’s group being able to return to Earth would increase considerably.
In any case, it wasn’t a matter they needed to make an immediate decision about.
And planet Amotia soon provided justification for Kim Seojun’s decision.
“Major Jan! We have an emergency!”
A member of the Polish headquarters staff hurried into the place where the emergency meeting was being held.
“A Mog legion is approaching!”
“How large is their force?”
At the question, the subordinate replied.
“We still don’t know the exact number, but we’ve confirmed at least five Tank Bugs!”
As soon as he heard that another Mog legion was approaching, the first thing that appeared in Kim Seojun’s mind was a question.
Last time, they had defeated a considerable number of their forces.
And because of the characteristics of the Mog, they normally wouldn’t launch another attack unless they could gather a force at least three times larger.
“Approximately how large is their total number?”
“We’re still not completely sure, but for now, it seems they don’t exceed ten thousand.”
However, the number of approaching forces didn’t even reach that proportion.
That didn’t fit the way the Mog normally behaved.
Of course, things didn’t always unfold according to exact calculations.
But if they weren’t acting according to their usual patterns, there had to be a reason for that as well.
However, one thing was clear.
“We have to reduce their numbers as much as possible before they reach us.”
Sitting around thinking wouldn’t reduce the number of Mog.
“Private First Class Park Boseop, get ready.”
“Yes, sir!”
Kim Seojun’s group immediately finished their preparations and set out.
They weren’t afraid.
They already had experience facing a similar combat force.
“What will the operation be? Are we doing the same thing as last time?”
“No.”
Above all, Kim Seojun now had something he hadn’t possessed before.
“We’ll use the Thunderclap to eliminate the Tank Bugs first.”
The Thunderclap, with its overwhelming range.
“I’ll go with you.”
Furthermore, this time Major Jan Zabłocki accompanied them.
They traveled toward the Mog legion as quickly as they could, with two people riding on each of the two hover bikes.
In truth, traveling using hover bikes wasn’t exactly a smart decision.
Combat required a great deal of consumable supplies, and aside from their mobility, practically nothing else could be expected from a hover bike.
However, Kim Seojun was an exception.
His enormous Inventory had reached such a size that it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to call it a mobile arsenal.
In that manner, Kim Seojun’s group headed toward the Mog legion and, at a certain point, stopped at a location.
“Here?”
As soon as they arrived, Major Jan Zabłocki showed a doubtful expression.
“There’s absolutely nothing here?”
It was natural.
They couldn’t see anything.
Nor could they detect any sign of danger.
The same was true for Kim Seojun.
However, Kim Seojun looked toward Park Boseop.
“Private First Class Park Boseop.”
“I’m sure. I can hear them perfectly. They’re rapidly approaching this way.”
Kim Seojun nodded at Park Boseop’s words.
In a situation like this, there was nothing more reliable than Park Boseop’s ears.
“I see.”
Major Jan Zabłocki, who knew about that ability, also understood immediately.
“You’re planning to lay mines here!”
He had assumed that Kim Seojun’s group had gotten ahead of the Mog legion’s route to plant explosives and reduce their numbers before they arrived.
It was a very intelligent method and, in fact, one of the methods hover riders used most frequently.
Its effectiveness wasn’t bad either.
Kim Seojun replied to Major Jan Zabłocki.
“We’ll use that method too.”
“Too?”
Major Jan Zabłocki showed a doubtful expression at that choice of words.
Kim Seojun didn’t explain it to him.
He simply showed him.
“Inventory.”
He took the Thunderclap out of his enormous Inventory.
As soon as he saw it, Major Jan Zabłocki once again showed a doubtful expression.
What was he planning to do by taking out the Thunderclap in a place from which they still couldn’t even properly see the Mog legion?
Rrrrrumble! Clunk!
Meanwhile, the Thunderclap began to move and, shortly afterward, its wheels were locked in place.
‘Locked?’
While Major Jan Zabłocki tried to understand, Kim Seojun, Park Boseop, and Lee Hyena got out of the vehicle and began moving hurriedly.
They took out several metal blocks that looked extremely heavy and began using them to reinforce the area around the Thunderclap.
They were installing supports for the Thunderclap.
And naturally, there could only be one reason to install those supports.
“D-Don’t tell me……?”
To withstand the tremendous recoil of the powerful railgun.
“F-From here?”
As soon as he realized that they intended to fire the railgun from that very spot, Major Jan Zabłocki’s face filled with disbelief.
“Y-You’re planning to fire it from here?”
Kim Seojun didn’t answer the question.
For starters, he didn’t have time to do so.
Installing those supports took much longer than it seemed, and even after they finished setting them up, they would have to check them again after every shot.
‘We won’t know if it’ll work until we try.’
Above all, not even Kim Seojun knew whether this would actually be effective or make any sense.
Not only was it his first time using a railgun like this in actual combat.
There wasn’t even any precedent for something like this.
Everything they were doing was a first.
‘If it doesn’t work, we’ll have to get the hell out of here.’
If things didn’t go well, they would have to retreat as quickly as possible and prepare another operation.
They didn’t have time to stand around explaining things.
“Get inside and aim! I’ll handle the work!”
“Thank you.”
Even that would have been impossible without Lee Hyena and her Super Strength.
Normally, they would have needed at least ten to fifteen military engineers to carry out work like this.
While Lee Hyena continued installing the supports, Kim Seojun and Park Boseop climbed back into the Thunderclap.
Then Kim Seojun began operating the railgun.
It wasn’t difficult.
‘It really is simple.’
The railgun’s controls were so simple and, at the same time, so refined that it was difficult to believe China had manufactured them.
“They’re coming. They’re getting closer.”
Finally, as Park Boseop informed him of the timing, even Kim Seojun began to make them out.
“Confirmed.”
At an overwhelming distance, approximately ten kilometers in a straight line, he could see the Mog legion approaching.
Naturally, he couldn’t make them out properly.
Even for Kim Seojun, whose eyesight was extraordinary, the Mogdogs and Thorn Snakes were nothing more than tiny dots.
Practically the only things he could distinguish were the Tank Bugs.
And that was enough.
Kim Seojun operated the railgun and aligned the red light with one of the Tank Bugs.
Finally, as soon as that light reached its target, Kim Seojun shouted.
“Charge!”
Whiiiiiiiiir!
At that instant, a sharp, high-frequency sound began to ring out, as though something were spinning violently.
Kim Seojun finished adjusting his aim until the very last instant and shouted.
“Fire!”
Boooom!
As soon as he finished speaking, Kim Seojun and Park Boseop’s world shook violently once.
It was like taking a punch to the jaw during a boxing match and suffering a concussion.
It was a completely different kind of impact from anything they had experienced until then.
An impact that made it feel as though space itself had trembled.
“Ugh!”
Even for Kim Seojun, who had experienced practically every kind of situation, that impact was something completely new.
He felt as though his brain were rattling inside his skull.
‘This recoil is absurd.’
He knew the recoil of a railgun wouldn’t be ordinary, but experiencing it from so close exceeded all expectations.
It was impressive in many ways.
‘And the Thunderclap can withstand this? This thing is completely insane.’
Equally impressive was the Thunderclap’s performance. Despite that tremendous recoil, it had simply shaken without showing any problems with its structure.
A conventional battle tank might have suffered malfunctions in its electronic systems or even structural damage from an impact like that.
‘China didn’t make this.’
Just as Park Boseop had said, this wasn’t something China could have manufactured solely with its own capabilities.
Of course, that was as far as his impressions went.
In the end, the fundamental value of any weapon came down to a single question.
Could it produce results?
The Status Window answered that question.
[You have eliminated a Tank Bug. You have obtained 500 points.]
[You eliminated it with a single shot. You have obtained 1,000 points as a One Shot, One Kill bonus.]
[You eliminated it from a distance greater than 5 kilometers. You have obtained 2,000 points as an Expert Marksman bonus.]
The notifications confirmed that everything had ended with a single shot.
Kim Seojun was pleased.
But not because he had obtained points.
Rather, because he had just discovered that he had a chance to eliminate Tank Bugs with a single shot.
“Prepare to reload!”
And he couldn’t waste that opportunity.
“What?”
Park Boseop still seemed dazed and failed to react properly to Kim Seojun’s words.
“We’ll aim at the next target.”
“What? What?”
However, as soon as he heard that, Park Boseop’s expression changed.
He had understood.
“D-Did you really k-kill it?”
If they were going to aim at the next target, that meant they had eliminated the one they had just attacked.
Kim Seojun responded to Park Boseop’s surprised reaction.
“Sixty-six seconds until reload. Major Lee Hyena, reposition the supports.”
“Ah, understood!”
Only then did Lee Hyena also understand what had happened and begin readjusting the position of the supports.
Meanwhile, Kim Seojun aimed again and began the countdown.
It was then.
“Uh! U-Uh!”
Park Boseop, who was monitoring the situation, shouted.
“A special individual has appeared! It’s at least Feather-class!”
Kim Seojun bit his lip when he heard that.
‘So this was why their calculations had changed.’
He finally understood why that Mog legion was behaving differently from its usual patterns.
And he also understood that this was absolutely not good news for either them or the Polish headquarters.
‘I really have shitty luck.’
As Kim Seojun once again reflected on his miserable life, a notification rang in his ears.
[An event mission has appeared.]
[You will receive a reward if you eliminate a Feather-class Tank Bug with One Shot, One Kill.]
An absurd mission.
[The mission reward is a Skill Upgrade Ticket (A).]
And an equally absurd reward.
