Chapter 99

was a game set in a prison where both humans and Creatures who had committed atrocious crimes were imprisoned.

When starting the game for the first time, the player was assigned a random role.

Among all the roles, Prison Physician had an extremely low chance of appearing and, at the same time, was the most difficult one.

The reason was that, unlike the others, it was constantly involved with the Creatures.

A single mistake was enough to end up in a bad ending where you yourself became a Creature.

And that wasn’t the only problem.

Inside that prison, the Prison Physician held a position that was despised by the prison guards.

The reason they looked down on him was very simple.

Because he was weak.

The prison guards were people who had undergone extremely intense special training, as well as rigorous mental conditioning, to confront the most dangerous Creatures.

Only those who managed to complete that training could be assigned there, so they took immense pride in themselves and, at the same time, harbored an intense hatred toward the Creatures.

The Prison Physician, on the other hand, had received no training whatsoever, was physically weak, and, on top of that, his job was to treat the Creatures.

It was inevitable that the prison guards saw him as a nuisance.

Throughout the entire time I played The Cell Block X as the Prison Physician, I suffered constant harassment from the prison guards.

More than once, they dragged me to places without surveillance cameras, such as the bathrooms or the showers reserved exclusively for the prison guards, and brutally beat me there.

I also experienced the Ending several times where I eventually gave in to their violence and supplied them with a drug to exterminate all the Creatures.

Even now, I still remembered with perfect clarity the scene where I personally stabbed them with syringes filled with poison and pushed the plungers down with my own hands.

I didn’t like any of the game’s other roles.

But the Prison Physician was, by far, the worst.

I shut my eyes tightly before opening them again.

‘Isn’t it better if I’m the one who does it?’

It was far better for someone like me, who already knew the game, to choose only the safe paths than to let someone completely ignorant suffer in the role of Prison Physician.

Besides, the Prison Physician was the only role capable of obtaining the True Ending in The Cell Block X.

I took a deep breath to calm myself and read the Quest window that appeared before me.

◆ Main Quest of : Grant the Creatures their true freedom.

The beings of Akasha are watching the Young God.

Their gaze has begun to reach planet Earth.

You have decided to overcome this unexpected Trial.

Furthermore, by obtaining the True Ending, you intend to prove that the Young God is the rightful owner of planet Earth.

If you complete the Quest, you will survive!

If you fail, your Recognition will decrease drastically! will explode!

The Main Quest was exactly the same as the True Ending I already knew.

Inside the prison, the sector where only the Creatures were confined was called “X.”

If you managed to grant true freedom to the Creatures imprisoned in X, you obtained the True Ending.

But even that True Ending disgusted me.

There were simply too many things in The Cell Block X that I disliked.

So much so that, after finishing the game, I even complained directly to the Developer about several aspects of it.

‘What was it that he replied back then?’

I remembered that he had said something.

But I couldn’t remember what it was.

I sighed at the emptiness in my memory and continued reading the Quest.

The reward for completing it was still survival.

However, the penalty for failure had changed slightly.

In Slay to Plate, I only lost Recognition.

But this time, in The Cell Block X, the loss would be much greater.

I still didn’t truly understand what Recognition was used for, so I decided to set that matter aside.

The real problem was still the explosion.

I had to clear the Trial no matter what to prevent The Cell Block X from exploding and spreading the virus.

‘At the very least, it has to be a five-star Trial.’

As I tried to estimate its rank, I figured the outside world must be in complete chaos.

Out of nowhere, a new meteorite had fallen.

Since the meteor shower four years ago, not a single new Trial Meteorite had fallen.

Unlike ordinary meteorites, Trial Meteorites were completely unpredictable.

They suddenly appeared in the atmosphere as though they had teleported there.

The world was already barely able to contain the existing Trials whenever they hatched.

And now, starting today, another equally alarming possibility had to be added—that new meteorites might continue to fall.

Without a doubt, a state of emergency must have been declared outside.

As I tried to figure out why that meteorite had fallen, another system window appeared.

Focus on finding a way to overcome the current crisis.

In other words, it was telling me to deal with the problem right in front of me first.

And it wasn’t wrong.

I lowered my gaze to the Pudding Slime on the floor.

He was silently watching me.

He seemed worried about my condition.

“I’m alright, Mr. Dominic.”

Until then, I had remained lying face down.

Finally answering him, I slowly sat up on the floor.

I held out my hand.

As though he had been waiting for that very moment, Dominic slowly slid over and climbed onto me.

Once settled in the palm of my hand, he politely asked,

“Does this sort of thing happen often?”

He meant whether it was common for a meteorite to suddenly fall and force people into a Trial.

“No. This is the first time it’s ever happened to me too.”

Not even in World Archive did anything like the fall of new meteorites exist.

And as far as I knew, there had never been a case where a meteorite hatched the very instant it fell and forced everyone into a Trial immediately.

I had promised myself that I would never blindly trust the information I had obtained from the game again.

But it was impossible not to feel bewildered whenever reality diverged so drastically from what I knew.

“Ah, Mr. Dominic. Were you assigned a role this time as well?”

“Indeed. The reason I wasn’t with you at first was because I had to witness the performance that explained my role.”

He was referring to the event’s introductory scene.

Dominic explained that he had watched the entire scene through to the end in order to learn the role he had been assigned, and that as soon as it ended, he immediately came to find me.

‘Wait he can teleport too?’

Dominic had most likely watched that scene somewhere different from where I had been.

And yet, he had suddenly appeared right in front of me.

‘Now that I think about it, it would actually be stranger if he couldn’t.’

After everything Dominic had already shown me, being surprised by something like that was almost ridiculous.

I naturally accepted his ability to move freely within the Trial and asked him,

“May I know what role you were assigned?”

“Prison Guard, Mr. Gunbam.”

The Pudding Slime’s body began to glow.

Then, with a small pop, a tiny prison guard cap appeared on top of his head.

“I also received the uniform, the mask, and a riot baton, but I find them rather uncomfortable to wear. I believe I should at least maintain an appearance appropriate to this place, so I’ll limit myself to wearing the cap.”

“……”

“Mr. Gunbam?”

The Pudding Slime, now wearing the prison guard cap, called out to me curiously.

I tried to control the muscles in my face, which kept relaxing, and immediately praised him.

“It suits you incredibly well. I was really surprised by how good that cap looks on you.”

I had to compliment him now so that, in the future, he’d also want to wear other hats.

Apparently, the compliment pleased him. Dominic began gently swaying his gelatinous body on the palm of my hand.

Thanks to that, I was able to admire the Pudding Slime wearing his cap from every angle.

After that, the weight I had felt upon entering The Cell Block X eased considerably.

If Dominic hadn’t been there, I wouldn’t have regained my composure so quickly.

What a relief that he was with me.

Focus.

The system window sent only a single word.

It seemed to be telling me to stop getting distracted by Dominic and come back to my senses.

I took an item out of my inventory.

It was the holographic badge, the most important item in the current situation.

I intended to use the holographic badge Samra had given me to report my situation and request support from the Trial Response Agency.

However, there was one small problem.

The moment I established communication, everything I said would be transmitted directly to Samra.

That meant I would no longer be able to speak freely with Dominic.

‘Isn’t there some way to turn it on and off?’

In any case, just like last time, the badge appeared to be active but wasn’t functioning, so I would probably have to stain it with blood.

Before doing so, I decided to explain the situation to Dominic.

“Mr. Dominic. This item allows me to communicate with the outside world, but once it’s activated, everything I say can be heard by the other party.”

I explained that I would try to find a way to activate and deactivate it at will, but that if I couldn’t, I probably wouldn’t be able to speak with him again while we remained inside the Trial.

Fortunately, Dominic accepted my explanation with complete understanding.

However, he added something rather strange.

“In the future, when Mr. Gunbam learns to speak like a true God, you will be able to keep that badge activated and still converse with me.”

Speak like a god?

Was he referring to something like telepathy?

I had many questions, but it didn’t seem like something I could do right now, so I decided to let it go.

Just as I was about to prick my finger with the badge’s tiny needle.

Dominic, who was already sitting on my shoulder, made a small hop and hurried back into my hand.

“Mr. Gunbam. It is not good to use blood.”

He looked up at me before asking,

“Who taught you to do it that way?”

“…Mr. Black Blocks.”

“That is a method used only by lower-ranked beings. From now on, you must use a different one.”

The Pudding Slime scolded me in a slightly stern tone.

He was so adorable that I could barely focus on his words, but I nodded anyway.

If there was another method, I had no interest in making myself bleed anymore.

“Very good, Mr. Gunbam. Allow me to teach you a new method. Before, it was impossible, but now you are capable of doing it.”

I had no idea why he was so convinced that I could do it now, but I decided to listen carefully.

I stood up from the floor and walked over to a table with a chair.

I placed Dominic and the badge on the table, sat down, and devoted my full attention to his explanation.

“Some time ago, I explained to you that even the most insignificant creatures possess a natural instinct to worship and revere a god.”

I remembered it perfectly.

It had been when the sword made of teeth wielded by Pasung’s Director Seo Moonchan had been unable to attack me.

“If you desire something, Mr. Gunbam, you simply need to give an order, as befits a God.”

According to Dominic, at my current level, I could issue orders without any problem to an object like that badge.

He also explained that using blood was, in reality, a form of begging.

It was like bowing my head before an infinitely inferior being and, on top of that, offering it a gift.

For that reason, Dominic strictly forbade me from ever using blood again.

“From now on, you must become accustomed to giving orders to everything whose rank is beneath your own.”

‘Does it really have to be an order?’

It sounded more like a caste system than anything else.

It wasn’t easy to understand the way someone at the absolute pinnacle like Dominic thought.

But it was obvious that if I said something like that, he’d end up scolding me.

So I simply nodded obediently, like a model student.

‘He’s so adorable…’

Thanks to the prison guard cap, he even looked like a drill instructor.

The tiny Slime instructor decided to help me with my first command.

“Since this is your first time, I shall lend you a little assistance.”

He slowly slid up onto my wrist.

Following his instructions,

I placed the badge in the palm of my hand and stared at it.

‘Turn on? Please? Connect me with Samra?’

Naturally, absolutely nothing happened.

Feeling somewhat embarrassed, I looked back at Dominic.

The Slime began to emit a gentle glow.

Part of that light spread across my skin as well.

“Now, Mr. Gunbam. Give the order.”

I looked at the badge again.

I felt strangely dazed.

Until just a moment ago, I had been convinced that I didn’t understand how to do it.

But now.

For some reason, I felt that I did.

Then I gave that insignificant creature an order.

The badge began radiating holographic light.

At the same time, I heard a quiet laugh followed by praise.

“Well done, Mr. Gunbam.”

And at that very moment, an urgent voice called out to me.

— Mr. Han Goyo!

I immediately came back to my senses.

‘But I hadn’t even given any order yet…?’

Dominic had said he would help me.

Had he been the one who established the connection?

“Samra!”

I greeted him happily and immediately began my report.

“Captain Kwak and I have entered a Trial. Fortunately, it’s one that I already know.”

I gave him a quick summary of The Cell Block X and the current situation before asking about the outside world.

“How are things out there?”

— A new meteorite has fallen for the first time in four years, so discussions are currently underway regarding the matter. In fifty minutes, an international videoconference led by the Trial Response Agency will be held.

Just as I had imagined, the outside world was in complete chaos.

As I wondered what consequences all of this might have, Samra continued.

— Lieutenant Colonel Je Hyuno and Lieutenant Won Taebeom are planning to enter the Trial today to support Mr. Han Goyo. And in addition.

Samra fell silent for a few moments.

Then, in a gesture rather unlike an android, he let out a faint sigh before continuing.

— Pasung’s CEO Cha also wishes to enter.
