Chapter 16
Yuwen Zhao held my hand, with my mother and younger brother following close behind.
With the most important people in my life all here, I felt an overwhelming sense of peace.
However, as we were leaving, I encountered Lan Nianhua. Dressed in her phoenix robes, she looked dignified and opulent, leaning against the railing. It seemed she had been waiting for me for a long time.
I asked the others to wait for me and walked slowly toward her.
A complex expression crossed Lan Nianhua’s face. “I’ve known about you two for a long time. How laughable that I always thought you were no threat—until His Majesty called out your name in his sleep.”
She glanced at Yuwen Zhao standing not far away. “You are luckier than I. You always manage to find someone who loves you, while I am trapped in this deep palace, playing the part of the Empress. I suppose… fate cannot be defied.”
I bowed to her. “I have never believed in fate. I only believe that we shape our own destinies.”
If I hadn’t stopped Qin Yiheng’s carriage back then, what would my fate be now?
Lan Nianhua froze.
I turned and walked toward Yuwen Zhao. He smiled and reached out his hand to me; I knew that was where my happiness lay.
We returned to the valley. With my mother and Yuwen Zhao’s master as witnesses, we bowed to heaven and earth and wed.
Amidst the dragon and phoenix decorations and the glow of red candles, I realized that Yuwen Zhao looked stunning in red.
On our wedding night, I played the “Ode to the Bright Moon.” He told me it was our song of love, and that as long as I was by his side, his heart was at peace.
Afterward, he took me to travel across the world’s famous mountains and rivers, and I finally witnessed the vastness of this great earth.
At a mountain whose name I did not know, we climbed the steps together. Yuwen Zhao pulled me into his arms and leaned down to kiss me.
Nestled in his embrace, I looked down at the sea of red covering the mountainside as a gentle breeze brushed past.
At last, the faces are as bright as the spring breeze, and the begonia blooms as it always has.
