Chapter 40

I was stunned.

First, by the sheer volume of profanity Bai Xuan’er had just unleashed—her vocabulary was practically a masterclass in creative swearing.

Second, by what she’d said about Lu Chen.

When I’d faked my death by falling off that cliff to escape, he’d been so sick he was coughing up blood and nearly died?

I couldn’t bring myself to believe it.

Maybe he was just coughing up blood because he was pissed off about not getting that hundred million he’d promised Bai Xuan’er?

Ten minutes later.

Everyone Bai Xuan’er brought with her was sprawled out on the ground.

Lu Chen didn’t say a word. He took a handkerchief from the thin guy and wiped his fingers clean, one by one, with meticulous care.

The silence was heavy, radiating a terrifying aura.

Bai Xuan’er cowered in the corner, her earlier arrogance completely extinguished.

When she looked at Lu Chen again, her eyes held nothing but dread and fear.

My chance had arrived.

I walked over quickly. “Go ahead, call your ‘him.’ Let’s see if he picks up.”

With trembling fingers, Bai Xuan’er dialed Lu Ting’s number:

“The number you have dialed is currently busy—”

I laughed.

“Know why he isn’t picking up? Because right now, he’s busy helping Yu Qiaoqiao pick out the latest engagement ring.”

The look in Bai Xuan’er’s eyes teetered on the edge of a total breakdown.

I leaned in close to her ear.

“The new engagement party is next weekend, at the Seaside Imperial Hotel.”

“Make sure to attend.”
