I feigned ignorance: “Didn’t you go buy him some cotton candy?”

The secretary was leading Tuotuo off to the restroom.

We both froze for a second.

Back when we were together, he was always the one to open my water bottles.

He was the one who twisted the caps, the one who carried my bag.

How did we end up like this, anyway?

I started rambling: “You have to remember for the future.

“When Tuotuo’s bronchitis flares up, don’t give him anything cold. If his stomach is acting up, brew some hawthorn tea.

“Also, cut back on the sweets, and remember to help him brush his teeth every day…”

“The family doctor knows all of that.” He glanced at his watch, seemingly unwilling to waste any more time on me. “I’ll hire the best family doctors, tutors, and housekeepers for him.”

“But that can’t replace your care,” I said sternly. “Jin Lan, when it comes to looking after Tuotuo, you need to be meticulous. You have to be hands-on.”

He turned his head to look at me: “It’s not like I’m forbidding you from seeing him.

“Why are you saying all this?”

“Also,” I continued, “take him for a physical every six months.

“He’s had a liver transplant.”

The look of shock had only just begun to leak from his eyes when Tuotuo returned.
