Chapter 53
The sixth day.
Tuotuo had to go to school.
Perhaps he wasn’t adjusting well to the new school and environment; when he came back that evening, he just squatted there playing with his toys, not saying a word.
Jin Lan was in another room, attending a video conference.
I asked him:
“Tuotuo, how’s the new school?”
He kept his head down, scribbling on paper: “It’s okay.
“Mom, I want to go back to my old school.”
I hugged him: “Yeah, Mom wants to go back to our old home, too.”
Tuotuo’s eyes lit up: “Then can we go back together?
“I want to eat the rice cakes that Grandpa sells downstairs.
“And I miss Grandma Li, too.”
I said: “Alright, let’s go back and take a look.”
I glanced at the closed door; Jin Lan should still be in his meeting. I tiptoed, holding Tuotuo’s hand as we headed for the door.
I had just cracked it open.
Jin Lan’s voice came from behind.
“Where are you going?”
