Chapter 2

When I was unpacking in the dorm, my other roommate, Cui Miao, was also there.

“Wow, Beibei, is all this your stuff? Look at these logos, they must cost a fortune.”

I smiled harmlessly and tucked a strand of hair behind my ear. “They’re all fakes. I just bought them for fun.”

Just then, Qu Fang walked in after soaking up all the admiration downstairs.

She looked at the makeup on my desk, scoffed disdainfully, and said as she walked further in,

“People really need to know their place. Act according to how much money you actually have.”

I nodded in agreement. “You’re absolutely right. Act according to your wealth, and definitely don’t harbor delusions about getting things that don’t belong to you.”

Acting as if I didn’t feel the sudden tension in the room, I leaned in proactively. “Hi, I’m Beibei.”

Qu Fang ignored me. She rummaged around for a bit, then grabbed a small bag and walked out. I stared at her exquisite little dress, lost in thought. Clothes really do make the person. To think someone from her background could get to where she is today.

“Just ignore her. It’s hilarious, she really thinks she’s some kind of princess.”

Cui Miao’s words pulled me back to reality. I turned and asked, “What, you guys don’t get along?”

“Me and her? We’ll never get along! You just got here so you don’t know,” Cui Miao pulled over a small stool, switching into full gossip mode.

“She tested in from some poor little county. It’s not like I look down on poor people—there are plenty who are poor but have high aspirations. But not her. She takes the college’s financial aid for impoverished students, then spends her nights naked-chatting with old men and her days wining and dining with young hunks. I mean, she has a decent face, but she pales in comparison to you.”

“How do you know all this?” I feigned shock.

“You’ll find out tonight. Eight days out of ten, she’s hiding behind that curtain.”

I followed the direction of Cui Miao’s finger and looked over at Qu Fang’s bed.
