Early Saturday morning, I was woken up by a loud knocking. This apartment was under my mom’s name and rarely had visitors. Thinking it was property management, I grumbled as I threw on my pajamas.

Outside stood several people in uniform. I recognized them—they were from the court.

“Are you Ms. Qu Fang?”

Qu Fang?

I shook my head, but just as I was about to close the door, one of them stopped me.

“This apartment has been put up for collateral. Since the money can’t be recovered, we need to repossess the property.”

I was fully awake now. “What do you mean repossess? This house is under my mom’s name. There’s no way she’s short on money and needs to mortgage a property.”

I called my mom right in front of them.

“Mom, that 150-square-meter apartment on the Third Ring Road is still under your name, right? Did you mortgage it for a loan?”

“Huh? What mortgage? No.”

“Then did you sign anything recently, like any documents?”

“Sign? Let me think. Oh, half a year ago, your dad said he was transferring some shares to me. I signed a bunch of papers. Is it related to that?”

Hearing the clattering of mahjong tiles through the phone made me even more irritable. My mom had been tricked again.

Hanging up, I took the court documents and looked closely. It turned out Qu Fang had used our house as collateral to buy another property in her hometown. Now that she couldn’t pay the mortgage on that one, they were auctioning off this one.

Made sense. I had made Lin Ruijie break up with her, so how was she going to pay it back?

Anger erupted from my heart, giving rise to vicious intent. Spending my family’s money to pay for her house, and she was still greedy for more!

After sending the court officials away, I remembered her postgraduate recommendation and sneered.
