Chapter 16
In the next second, Murong Feng kicked the fire out. Before Luo Huanghun could react, he tackled her to the ground. She didn’t even have time to mourn the rabbit before the sound of a sharp blade cutting through the air reached her ears!
“Assassins. Close your eyes and don’t look. I can keep you safe.” Murong Feng’s lowered voice came from right beside her ear. Luo Huanghun leaned against his chest, listening to his steady, powerful heartbeat, and felt no fear.
How many people wanted Murong Feng dead? Chancellor Ren would be the first who wouldn’t let him go!
She shouldn’t have let him come out to play…
Murong Feng led Luo Huanghun as they fought to break through the encirclement. His martial arts were superb; even while protecting her, he didn’t fall into a disadvantage.
However, seeing they couldn’t break his defense, the assassins targeted Luo Huanghun. Suddenly, an arrow streaked toward her. In his haste, Murong Feng could only use his own body to block it.
Murong Feng let out a muffled groan, but his body surged with power. He pulled out the arrow and struck back at the attacker, tearing open a gap in their formation and leading Luo Huanghun away.
Murong Feng’s previous saber wound hadn’t fully healed, and now he had an arrow wound. Combined with the heavy rain, he soon collapsed from exhaustion once they reached a safe area.
Luo Huanghun supported him for a long time until she, too, fainted from physical exhaustion.
When she woke up again, the first thing she saw was the battered Murong Feng, and she immediately burst into tears.
“Stop crying. I’m not dead yet. The noise is making my head ache…” A raspy voice came from beside her. Luo Huanghun looked toward the sound; Murong Feng was awake, watching her with a frown.
In his current state, he looked scary enough to stop a child from crying at night.
But Luo Huanghun wasn’t afraid of him. “Who’s crying for you?”
With tear-filled eyes, she glanced at Murong Feng. Seeing his layers of wounds and remembering he had taken this one for her, her tears wouldn’t stop.
Murong Feng closed his eyes, his head throbbing. “Fine, cry if you want to, it’s just…”
He was actually quite easy to talk to…
“Just what?” Luo Huanghun leaned closer to Murong Feng, wanting to hear what he had to say.
In the next moment, she was pulled in by a powerful hand, and her head was pressed against Murong Feng’s shoulder. “You might as well lean on me while you cry. Luo Huanghun, I won’t leave you alone.”
At this moment, Luo Huanghun felt like a traveler who had been walking alone in the desert for a long time and had finally found an oasis.
“Murong Feng, don’t get hurt anymore…” She sniffled, leaning against him and crying for a long time. Eventually, fearing she would press on his wounds, she stood up.
“I’ll go find medicine for you. I can treat your injuries.”
Luo Huanghun looked around and finally recognized the house they were in. This was the bamboo hut behind White Horse Temple where she had once lived.
A kind-faced old monk walked in through the door. It was Master Liaoran of White Horse Temple.
“Amitabha. Fated meetings and partings are but a thought away. Benefactor Luo, we meet again.”
Master Liaoran’s wise and clear eyes were full of gentleness. Luo Huanghun’s grandfather had been an old acquaintance of his, so the Master was very affectionate toward her.
The two of them went out to the courtyard, where a game of Go was already set up on the stone table in the center.
“Come, let us play a game.”
Luo Huanghun found it a bit strange. How did Master Liaoran know she could play? In her past life, after she left this place, they had never crossed paths again.
Luo Huanghun had always lacked patience. She had only learned to play shortly after her marriage to Ren Jingsi in her previous life, learning the game to pass the time while she was left alone in her room.
But now, her mind was troubled, and she had no patience for the game. Before long, she had lost completely.
“The past cannot be chased. Since you have been given a chance to start over, it must be because the karmic cycle is not yet complete. If you follow your heart, you shall break through this tribulation.”
He really knew she was reborn!
Luo Huanghun’s head snapped up. Master Liaoran gave her a gentle smile but said nothing more as he rose and departed.
