Chapter 9
Three months can accomplish a lot.
Ren Jingsi officially welcomed Li Ling’er into the family, staying at her place every day, discussing poetry, literature, and life philosophy, and enjoying herself immensely.
Occasionally, the two of them would go to the garden together and encounter Luo Huanchen. Ren Jingsi would simply frown at her, while Li Ling’er’s manners remained impeccable.
After all, it was only two more months before she could be officially recognized. What harm could there be in bowing one’s head a little lower now?
However, the servants of the Ren family treated Luo Huanchen, the young mistress, with even greater disdain, yet she remained indifferent.
Luo Huanchen moved to a separate courtyard under the pretext of eating vegetarian food and praying, where there were fewer people, she had less presence, and it was more convenient for her to act.
She had already explored the terrain of the Ren family and determined that Luo Chenhui’s private seal was most likely in the study of the Minister of Rites.
But she needed to find an excuse to get close to that place without raising suspicion, so she personally made a bowl of soup, and the daughter-in-law gave it to the father-in-law, which was only natural.
Luo Huanchen asked Qingmei to carry the soup and enter the study of the Minister of Rites with a tense expression. She finally found it in a corner of the bookcase, and he didn’t even bother to hide it, which showed how confident he was about dealing with the Luo family.
Before Luo Huanchen could get angry, two cuckoo calls suddenly rang out outside. This was the signal she and Qingmei had agreed upon. Someone had arrived!
She rushed out, and just as she closed the door, she saw the Minister of Rites walking over. His eyes were fixed on Luo Huanchen: “What are you doing here?”
Luo Huanchen bowed respectfully: “I came to give the father-in-law a bowl of soup.”
The Minister of Rites didn’t speak, but his eyes, which could see through people’s hearts, were fixed on her. Luo Huanchen felt cold sweat trickling down her back, and Qingmei’s hands holding the soup were already trembling.
This couldn’t go on! It would be discovered!
Just as Luo Huanchen looked up, a figure suddenly appeared beside her. Ren Jingsi grabbed Luo Huanchen’s hand and said to the Minister of Rites: “I think this soup is good, let her bring you a bowl.”
Luo Huanchen was stunned, and the Minister of Rites smiled. The dangerous aura instantly disappeared: “That’s right, let the servants bring it in from now on.”
“This is also her filial piety,” said Ren Jingsi, then led Luo Huanchen away.
The Minister of Rites looked at the soup on the table, stood up, and went to the bookcase. He opened a box and looked at the seal lying quietly inside, closed the lid, and then poured out the soup.
Ren Jingsi followed Luo Huanchen to the separate courtyard. Luo Huanchen politely said thank you: “Thank you, husband.”
For some reason, Ren Jingsi looked at her like this and felt an inexplicable irritability in his heart.
He had already married his beloved Li Ling’er. In two more months, the divorce document would take effect, and Li Ling’er would become his wife, and they would live happily ever after.
But looking at Luo Huanchen’s indifferent attitude towards him, he suddenly felt uncomfortable.
Just like when he stayed at Li Ling’er’s place, he would suddenly remember how Luo Huanchen used to look at him with love in her eyes.
At this time, he would come to the separate courtyard, look at the dim lights inside, and listen to the laughter of Luo Huanchen and Qingmei. He always felt uncomfortable.
So when he and Li Ling’er met Luo Huanchen, they would deliberately act more intimate, but Luo Huanchen seemed to completely ignore it, and he could only keep a straight face and pretend to be indifferent.
But this thorn was stuck in his heart: Luo Huanchen didn’t care about him.
I don’t know when it started, but when Luo Huanchen looked at him, she would always perform a gentle bow. He knew that there was no longer any of him in those eyes.
When did it start? Maybe it was on the day of the wedding, when he went to Li Ling’er’s place and left her alone in an empty room?
Until now, Ren Jingsi finally understood that he regretted it.
Luo Huanchen didn’t wait for Ren Jingsi’s words, and she didn’t care. She went to her room on her own.
But her hand was grabbed by Ren Jingsi, who looked at her straight: “Can I stay tonight? Do you want me to stay?”
Luo Huanchen looked at Ren Jingsi and saw her own reflection in his eyes. His hand was still tightly gripping hers, warm and real. This was almost the scene she had wanted to see in her previous life, and her nose stung and she almost shed a tear.
But it was only almost.
In the next second, Luo Huanchen resolutely pulled her hand away and laughed: “Never mind, my place is shabby, and I’m afraid my husband won’t be used to it.”
Ren Jingsi stumbled away.
