Chapter 14
Murong Feng was momentarily satisfied, and finally, he was ready to apply the medicine to Luo Huanghun.
Luo Huanghun was on edge, terrified he would start another scene. She remained cautious, determined not to make a single sound.
This was the first time Murong Feng had applied medicine for her. His rough fingers massaged her skin gently, and it felt incredibly comfortable.
Luo Huanghun pursed her lips and suddenly asked, “Murong Feng, why did you suddenly decide to marry me?”
Murong Feng’s fingers stiffened. He suddenly looked up, staring fixedly at Luo Huanghun. His icy, emotionless eyes held a trace of barely perceptible tenderness. “Ling’er, do you really not remember me?”
Luo Huanghun’s head snapped up. She felt as if her brain had stopped functioning.
What did Murong Feng mean? How did he know her name was Ling’er?
“Three years ago, on the back mountain of White Horse Temple, you saved me. I was in a hurry to go to war then, but I made up my mind to find you when I returned. Heaven was kind; I returned victorious and found you again before I even started looking.”
Luo Huanghun looked up. The corners of Murong Feng’s mouth curled into a smile as he pulled out a sachet. “It’s this scent. I recognized it back in the cave.”
“I finally found you.”
Luo Huanghun closed her eyes as the memories came flooding back.
Her grandfather was a famous master of medicine, but his son had no interest in the field. Instead, her father joined the Hanlin Academy and, over a decade, became the leader of the upright scholar-officials.
Luo Huanghun had been rebellious since childhood, only behaving when she studied medicine with her grandfather. She had inherited all of his medical skills.
Three years ago, after her grandfather passed away, she was furious at the Luo family’s neglect of him. In a fit of pique, she moved to the back mountain of White Horse Temple to keep watch over his spirit.
There, she encountered Murong Feng, who had fallen into a pit and been injured by a bear trap.
Luo Huanghun had treated Murong Feng’s wounds. Afterward, it rained heavily, and she developed a fever. In her dazed state, she vaguely saw Murong Feng take her sachet before he crawled out of the trap. Later, she was found and taken away by Luo Chenhui.
Because of that fever, she forgot some things. When she returned to the Luo family, she became the gentle Miss Luo, losing her former arrogance and becoming strictly conventional in every way.
The only time she defied her parents’ wishes was regarding her marriage, when she insisted on marrying Ren Jingsi, the son of Chancellor Ren.
Chancellor Ren was ambitious. He had already eliminated his greatest enemy, the military commander Prince Guangling, and his next target was the Luo family, the leaders of the scholar-officials.
Luo Huanghun was the breakthrough point. Using her as leverage, the Ren family repeatedly forced the Luo family to take sides, eventually helping Chancellor Ren consolidate his power.
Once the Luo family was no longer useful, Luo Huanghun was imprisoned by Ren Jingsi until she died, Luo Chenhui died a wrongful death, and the Luo family was destroyed.
Past events and old memories rushed to her heart.
The scenes Luo Huanghun had witnessed as a lonely ghost were all caused by her own hand.
Unfortunately, in her past life, she hadn’t understood the silent endurance and worry of her parents. She had been immersed in her own romantic feelings, neglecting what was most important.
Luo Huanghun finally couldn’t help but burst into bitter tears.
Murong Feng didn’t know why she was crying so heart-wrenchingly. He could only pull her into his arms. “Don’t cry, don’t cry. How about you hit me a few times?”
Looking at the flustered Murong Feng, Luo Huanghun suddenly laughed. She murmured aggrievedly, “Why did you come so late…”
Why hadn’t Murong Feng found her in her previous life?
He had let her sink into that quagmire for so, so long—long enough that she thought there wasn’t a single shred of light left in the world.
That was why, when she finally saw a glimmer of light, she had thrown herself toward it so resolutely.
She was also grateful that she could live this life over again.
Murong Feng held her even tighter. “As long as I am alive, I will definitely find you.”
Luo Huanghun suddenly cried even louder.
How could she have forgotten? In her previous life, Murong Feng never came back at all.
